Course Description:

Medical Examiners who perform driver medical exams are expected to understand fully the medical standards of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) and related guidance. The National Registry requires medical examiners to participate in required training, pass a certification test, and register on the National Registry system to become a certified medical examiner.

This program includes coursework that is in accordance with Core Curriculum Specifications utilizing FMCSA Materials. Each participant will receive a certificate of completion. Complete contact information of all attendees will be provided to FMCSA/NRCME.
  • Goals of FMCSA medical examiner's role:  General history of FMCSA; emphasis in reducing crashes; role of the medical examiner; resources
  • Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operations: Responsibilities and work environment of CMV operations; case examples
  • Driver identification and information: Identify the driver and obtain, review, and document driver medical history
  • Performing the driver's medical examination: Perform, review, and document the exam; FMCSA physical exam requirements; FMCSA guidelines on medical examiner discretion; case studies
  • Diagnostic testing: FMCSA diagnostic testing requirements; medical examiner's ability to request further evaluation by a specialist
  • Educating the driver on medications: Inform the driver about medications (i.e. possible side effects and interactions) and non-disqualifying medical conditions that require remedial care; inform the driver of consequences of non-compliance with a care plan
  • Determining driver certification outcome: Assess the driver's medical and physical qualification to operate a CMV safely; determine length of time certification should be valid
  • Reporting and documentation requirements: Documentation of medical examination findings; FMCSA required report forms and appropriate recording methods; medical examiner's certificate

Dr. Christopher Murray

Dr. Christopher Murray is a native of Hastings, NE, graduating from Hastings College in 1994. He graduated Summa Cum Laude/Valedictorian at Cleveland College of Chiropractic in 2007. Dr. Murray is also a board certified naturopathic physician, certified by the American Nauturopathic Medical Certification Board, and a DOT certified medical examine
